This Disney Channel Original Movie (DCOM) came out in 1998.
This was not a great movie. I am all for corny and cheesy movies, but this one I could not jump in with both feet. Unfortunately, I am not the only one who dislikes this movie. When it came out, it did not do very well.
This script did have good bones to it, but it did not reach its full potential. I am surprised to see that people agreed to do this movie. I just wonder what was it in the script that made them say yes. Like I said before, I do see where it is appealing. But once you get into it, there are a lot of questions.
I will say though, Kirk Cameron, the main actor, was great in it. He truly committed himself to the role. He gave 100% of himself to this. The rest of the cast in this movie were wonderful to watch.
Overall, even though it was not the greatest movie. I still say give it a watch! It will most definitely give you something to talk about next time you chat about movies.

The movie starts off with a photo montage of Jack stunning scientists by being able to talk to his dog. We see he can talk to dogs through these news paper articles. Clive Windsor is reading these articles with great interest. We head over to Jack’s office where we learn that he no longer posses the ability to talk to dogs. He has a business and pretends he still has this ability. We see him in a session with a dog, but Jack is sleeping. The couples dog bursts into the session and see Jack sleeping while their dog is eating a sandwich.
The couple threatens to call the Mayor because Jack is a fraud. When they leave, Clive Windsor and his driver, Calvin Bridges, come with Clive’s dog Lucky. Clive tells Jack there is something bothering Lucky and he would like for him to find out what. Jack takes Lucky back into the office where he starts to hear a whooshing sound. Jack look and Lucky and starts to realize he can hear his thoughts. Jack is startled because he has not been able to do this since he was 14.
When the looks between Jack and Lucky started, I thought we were going to hear the voice of the dog. Sadly, this did not happen. I have no idea why they did not get a voice actor to play this role. I truly do think this would have made the movie better. They could have had so much fun with it.
Jack gives Lucky back to Clive. He does tell Clive that Lucky says he is worried about him and the hostility that surrounds him because of the three people that live in his home.
I also did not understand why Jack was so willing to give up Lucky. His powers returned. Why would he not be happy about this? I feel he would get excited because he is no longer a fraud.
Two weeks have passed and we see Jack’s business being taken away. The couple from the beginning of the movie did in fact contact the Mayor’s office to shut him down. In the middle of all this, Calvin comes in the office to speak with Jack. He tells Jack Mr. Windsor has passed away and he is needed at the Estate because of Lucky. We then cut to the mansion where the lawyer, Alison, is reading the will. Lyle, Rueben, and Margaret are left with none of the 64 million dollars their uncle had. All of the money went to Lucky. Jack shows up and Alison tells him Mr. Windsor has named him trustee of the money. He is to help Lucky spend the money as he sees fit. We see Jack itch his ear while Lucky scratches, and Jack tastes leather in his mouth while Lucky is carrying a shoe.
Now this is where I thought this move was gonna get good. We were going to see Jack spend all this money on himself and pretend it is coming from the dog. This did not happen! I was very disappointed in that.
Windsor’s family is beyond upset and they attack Jack. Jack is able to flee. The family goes to another lawyer, Mr. Phister, to see their options. He tells them they will need to go to court and show that Jack is mentally unstable. Phister says he will do it for 30% of their fortune. The family says no and they try to take matters into their own hands.
Back at the mansion, Jack is still freaking out that his gift has returned. Realizing it has returned, he talks to Lucky and tells him that he needs to always remain calm. Lucky then proceeds to get excited about digging up an old bone. In his excitement, we see Jack start to turn into a dog and does the same actions Lucky does. Jack also becomes the voice of the dog. The maids see this and run away. Jack and Lucky tear a room apart where they rip a couch and chew on shoes.
This would have been SO MUCH funnier if they had given a voice to the dog!! Also, it was a bummer that we did not see how Jack gets out of becoming a dog. It was not consistent at all throughout the movie.
Jack wakes up and sees the destruction they caused. He talks to Lucky and says this cannot happen again. He continues to talk to Lucky and we see a flashback. Mr. Windsor is pouring sugar into his coffee and Lucky barks at him to take him outside in the pouring rain. Windsor agrees, but while outside we see Windsor die.
Lucky is still sad, so they head over to the mall. Since Lucky is excited to go, Jack turns back into a dog and runs on all fours and jumps into the car. Both Lucky and Jack are barking while the car is moving and sticking their heads out the window. At this same time, the family members pull up along side Jack and try to get video of the way Jack is acting. Reuben is filming, but then realizes he forgot to put film in it.
At the mall, Lucky and Jack spend thousands of dollars at the mall. They buy furniture, leather shoes, and dog toys.
This whole scene I wanted Lucky to have a human voice. The movements the dog is doing is great, but it would have been THAT much better if they would have given him a voice. This also would have been a great opportunity to have Jack spend some money on himself. I think that would have been a little bit better of a movie if they embraced that side of it.ย
At the mall food court, Alison meets Jack so he can sign more paper work. During this time, Lucky gets excited smelling food from a place called Wonton Tommy’s. Jack then starts to smell the same food and leaves Alison in a hurry. Jack and Lucky go all out and eat tons of food along with food from the garbage can. They get thrown out, and Alison does not see any of this.
Back at the mansion everything Jack and Lucky have boughten are being delivered and they are remodeling a section of the house. Margaret shows up unannounced to talk to Jack. Lucky sees her and gets very angry. This causes Jack to turn into a dog again and he chases Margaret away and rips off a piece of her skirt. After everyone leaves, Calvin and Jack show Lucky his newly remodeled area of the house.
The area they remodeled for Lucky was so cool. It was definitely dog heaven.
Lyle then tells Margaret and Reuben that they will need to break into the house and shoot Lucky with a tranquilizer dart. They are able to hop the fence and cut the power to the house. As they are inside. They are fumbling around trying to find Lucky and shooting each other with the darts at the same time. Jack and Lucky run the family members out of the house, but Jack did not see who it was.
Ok. This whole scene. This was RIDICULOUS! It made no sense. They are shooting each other with tranquilizer darts and NOTHING IS HAPPENING! Like what?! Margaret gets shot twice in the butt at it did nothing to her. So how in the heck were these darts supposed to knock Lucky out?
Another thing that made no sense was Jack finally runs into the family members. But Jack says he did not see who it was when talking to Calvin. Huh?! He was right in front of them?! Ugh!
The family members head back to the lawyer, Mr. Phister, and hire him. Now Phister has raised his rate to 50%. The next day Alison heads over to the house to warn Jack. They turn on the TV and see the family members and the lawyer talking to the press. They are saying Mr. Windsor was mentally unstable and Jack was taking advantage of him.
They head to court, but Jack does not tell Alison about his thing where he turns into a dog. Witnesses we see are people we have seen throughout the movie. The man from the beginning testified saying Jack is a fraud, the housekeeper saw Jack digging bones in the yard, a security guard from the mall saw Jack and Lucky eating out of the garbage can. Sadly, Calvin had to also testify and say he has seen Jack this way. Jack also takes the stand and things are not going his way. They take a break and he tells Alison the family can have everything but not Lucky. She tells him that’s not how it works so then he asks to go back on the stand.
He goes back to prove that he is not lying about his abilities. Mr. Phister gets irritated and all the charades Jack is doing and this causes Lucky to get angry. This makes Jack turn into a dog. Lucky and Jack are looking in opposite directions and Phister shows Lucky items and Jack says what they are. Lucky and Jack are now one mind. Jack starts to talk for Lucky saying how awful the family members are. Lucky then has a flashback to when Windsor dies. He remembers seeing Lyle putting something in the coffee Windsor is about to drink.
Jack snaps out of being a dog and confronts Lyle about putting poison in Windsor’s drink. Lyle then pulls out a gun. The family members try to escape, but Lucky attacks them. During this time we hear a gun shot. Lucky was only grazed in the ear. Alison touches the ear and Jack says ”Ow”.
How did he get the gun in the court room?!
Back at the house, Lucky has Jack adopt all the dogs from the dog store. Alison and her daughter are at the house and Jack surprises the daughter with a dog.
What the what? I cannot believe Jack gifted the daughter a dog. That is a lot of responsibility to give a kid without discussing it with their parent.
Well, that’s the movie. It was a strange one for sure. There was a lot of potential there that was not achieved sadly.
