This was an interesting issue. I enjoyed it, but I think they missed the mark.
Artwork in these stories will always be good to me. I love how the continually capture the spirit of the Scooby-Doo television show. Everyone working on this limited series run you can tell are enjoying their time and are doing their research. The drawing and the colors blend together very well.
Storytelling could have been a lot better. It seemed too rushed and the main villain was not utilized correctly. This story focused on the Ghost Clown who is the arch nemesis of the Scooby Gang. Ghost Clown is a very famous villain in their world. They hinted at the Joker in this issue too, but did nothing with that. So, to me this could have been great with them playing off of each other. Maybe even making this a two issue or something. I know they cannot go too dark with it, but it would have been fun to see how they do the Joker as a Scooby-Doo like character.
Overall, this was a good issue, but I do think there was far more potential in it. I did enjoy the Scooby Batsignal.
🔴 Spoiler Summary Spew 🔴
Shaggy is telling a story when he and Scooby were coming out of a movie eating their popcorn. A kid scared them and they dropped their popcorn all over the floor. Shaggy says he and Scooby learned a lesson to never save your snacks. To eat them as soon as you can.
The Mayor of Crystal Cove takes the microphone away from Shaggy and presents the Mystery Inc. gang with a key to the city. Commissioner Gordon and Batman are also at the ceremony. Gordon is about to present the Mayor something when a car drives into the stage. A bunch of clowns come out of the car and start to terrorize people. Batman, Batgirl, and Daphne start beating up on the clowns.
They capture the clowns and start revealing who they are. They realize one clown is a baker and the other a kindergarten teacher. Batman suspects they are all mind controlled and flashes a light in their eyes to wake them up. During this same time, a mystery person approaches Gordon. Batman suspects the Joker is behind it all.
Gordon approaches Batman and says it wasn’t the Joker, it was the Mystery Inc. gang. The gang gets arrested, Scooby and Batgirl look for clues, and Batman heads out to find the Joker. Batgirl learns from Scooby that the Mystery Inc. gang has fought their own clown.
Back at the Courthouse, the Mystery Inc. gang are being judged by the Ghost Clown. Ghost Clown, Harry the Hypnotist, said that he had plenty of time to plot his revenge in jail. He sentences the gang to life in prison.
Ghost Clown is the Scooby gangs nemesis.
Batman breaks through the window to capture the Joker. He soon realizes it’s not him, but the Ghost Clown hypnotizes him to throw the Gang in Arkham. Batgirl and Scooby barge in and save Batman and Gordon from being hypnotized. Ghost Clown escapes. He runs into the Joker, and the Joker sprays him with a laughing gas. He said that he doesn’t like knock off clowns.
Gordon, Batman, and the gang all go up to the roof to show the gang their surprise. It was a Scooby Signal. Just like the one Batman has in Gotham.
