This DCOM came out in 1998 (I was 7 at this point 😐). The same year as You Lucky Dog. This movie was based off of a 1865 novel called Hans Brinker, or The Silver Skates by Mary Mapes.
If you like the movie RAD or The Mighty Ducks, then you will enjoy this movie. The theme is very heavy on good friendships and sticking together. And it also makes you look inward and see what type of friend you want to be.
What I enjoy most about this movie is that it is great for kids now a days, along with the adults who grew up with this movie.
Although the main character was Andy (aka Brink), Gabriella to me, was front and center. Nothing against Erik von Detten, but Gabriella was a favorite for me. Her character was for sure ahead of its time. Her character wanted to be treated as an equal to the boys, but still wanted recognition that she is a girl.
Speaking about Erik von Detten, I totally forgot he was in this movie! I mainly know him from The Princess Diaries. So, it was a pleasant surprise when I saw he was in this movie. I thought Erik was great, along with all his other cast mates. Everyone was cast perfectly and they all understood their roles. They all embodied their characters perfectly.
While watching Brink! I felt like I was transported back to ’98. Yes, I know I was little. But I was still at an age where I was very aware of my surroundings. The clothing, the hair, the insults! Man it was fun to be transported back into that time.
Overall, this movie was great! I know it is one of the top DCOM’s that are out there, but I will hold my judgement. ONLY because I have a long way to go since I will be rewatching them. But this one was very enjoyable to watch. I can see why this one is very popular.
Quick side note, the soundtrack was legit!
You can catch Brink! on Disney+
🔴 Summary Spoiler Spew 🔴
Andy (also known as Brink) is moving quickly in his house because he is running late. His friends are waiting for him on a bus bench. They miss the bus, so they decide to skate to the beach.
Their skating reminds me a lot of the original Power Ranger movie when they were skating after the jumped out of the plane. Also kind of a little Mighty Ducks. Also, the whole missing the bus thing. The bus didn’t even stop! So I don’t know how they even missed it. I chuckled when the bus just kept going.
When they get to the beach they see a photographer from In Line Magazine. So the group decide to give the guy a show. They wonder why he isn’t looking at them, but they see he is waiting for team X-Bladz. A classmate of the group, Val, makes them to leave the pit (the area they have been skating) because they need it for a photoshoot.
One of the sidekicks from X-Blades asks Gabrielle if she has ever been to join for impersonating a boy. She says, “No. Have you?”. That gave me such a good laugh.
Andy is not happy with this. So he goes to nearby skate boarders and says that the X-Bladz group has been insulting them. The skate board group then goes and interrupts the photoshoot. The next day is the first day of school. Andy’s Dad is not happy with how happy Andy is about the first day. The Dad is pleased with his daughter because she is miserable.
The Dad to me is such a jerk! He was such a downer when it came to supporting his son.
At school Andy, Jordy, and Peter are shocked when they see Gabriella wearing a dress for the first day. Val comes by and steals Peter’s shoes and throws them up on a wire because of what they did. Gabriella gives him her shoes to wear for the day. To get Val back, the gang puts worms in his sandwich.
Worms?! I thought that was super disgusting.
Val challenges the group to a skate off, relay style, during school hours. Andy is about to win but sees a member of the X-Bladz get injured. Back at home Andy overhears his parents having money trouble. At school, Val goes up to the group saying there is a spot open on their sponsored team, but none of them can try out for it. An X-Bladz sidekick asks Val if he thinks Andy will show up, and he says yes.
Ok. I understand this is a movie. But WHERE WERE THE TEACHERS when it came to the race? The went through the whole school and not one teacher in site. And why could they not race after school? Also, not sure how Val knows about Andy’s family money issues.
Also, the OG Black Power Ranger is in this?! Loved that surprise! He was the member of X-Bladz that got injured.
During a skating session Andy leaves his friends to go try out for the X-Bladz. Andy tells the X-Bladz that they cannot tell his other group or else he will walk away. Val does tell him that he will keep it a secret as long as he doesn’t say anything to him in front of his friends. Andy does tell his family that he wants to get a job skating. He tells them a sponsor will pay $200 a week. His Dad says no way because he needs to not think about skating 24/7.
To welcome him on the team without parental consent is crazy to me. I understand it is a movie, but still. Also, it is kind of bonkers that the Dad would not be supportive. Like your son is gonna get paid for something he already does.
During school Andy is trying to tell his friends that he joined X-Bladz, but he is interrupted by Val. At an X-Bladz practice Val is jealous of the attention Andy is getting, so he makes Andy run the whole course again after he just did it. The other members of the team do not like this.
Back at home, Andy’s Dad got him a job at a dog groomers since he was so eager to help out around the house. We then go through a day in the life of Andy’s new schedule. He goes to school, dog groomers to work, practice with X-Bladz, then practice with his old team.
The whole day in the life of Brink did not make sense to me. They show him having a hard time getting up in the morning and then by lunch time he is sleeping. I just wish they made it clear that Brink had been doing this routine for a while. But the way they made it seem was that it was his first day ever of the new routine.
It is the day of the invitational and Peter goes over to Andy’s house because Andy told him he was sick. Too sick to skate with them at the invitational. The gang goes to the invitational anyway and they see Andy skating. Andy tried to apologize, but they won’t hear him out. At home Andy’s Dad is now complaining that his son is too unhappy. He tries talking, but Andy isn’t really responding.
Team X-Bladz is at the downhill course for the championships when they run into Andy’s friends. They decide to have a skate-off between Gabriella and Andy. Whoever wins gets the downhill course. Val throws rocks on the street causing Gabriella to take a big fall and scrape up her arm really bad. Brink visits Gabriella and she calls him a sellout. At home Andy and his Dad have a heart to heart.
The Dad to me is such a jerk. I know he was trying with his heart to heart. Calling him a good son and a good friend. He also said that he would like to watch him skate in the competition coming up. I just wish he were more supportive. Like your kid found how to make money doing something he loves. I know the Dad hates that he skates, but at least there is money to be made.
Andy finds Val and tells him that he quits the team and threw a smoothie in his face. He then goes to his old friends at the skate park and tells them the Dog Grooming place he works at is going to sponsor him. He reveals that it is actually him fronting the costs. He got a 4 month advance on his paycheck.
At the championship Andy’s mom and sister are in the audience. His sister tells him to skate better. Team X-Bladz stays in first while Pup’n’Suds (Andy’s team) is in fourth place. Pup’N’Suds continue to do well and make it to the finals. It is all about the downhill and it is one skater from X-Bladz and one skater from Pup’N’Suds.
In the downhill Val is cheating to get ahead of Andy. Andy then comes out of an ally to get to the same place where Val is. Andy wins the race. Since there are cameras around everyone is mad at Val for cheating. Andy and his team receive the championships trophy.
Val should have been automatically disqualified. I know everyone saw, but they should have announced that he can’t do that and he is disqualified. Andy should have been too since he went off course, but Val cheated so I guess that cancels out?
