I will be honest. This was not my favorite comic. Only because I did not understand it 😅 I read through it multiple times and did not understand what the bad guy was after.
Even though this issue was not particularly entertaining, the artwork will always be fantastic. This series run has been such a blast from the past. Watching the Scooby-Doo cartoon while eating cereal.
There is not too much for me to say about this issue, but at the end of the day, it was still Batman with the Mystery Inc. gang. That will always be a good time to me.
🔴 Spoiler Summary Spew 🔴
Bruce Wayne is talking to reporters about a brand new ship that features all of the newest Waynetech. To start off this new ship, he is hosting a mystery cruise with the Mystery Inc. crew.
All the while Bruce is talking to reporters. Scooby and Shaggy were on the ship getting all the food they can. I love when they stay true to the characters. OF COURSE Shaggy and Scooby would go first on the ship to eat, even though the food on the ship is all you can eat.
When they Mystery Inc. crew are heading toward the ship, we see two cloaked in black figures talking to each other saying their presence will not ruin what they have planned.
Daphne and Velma want to go for a swim when they hear a cry for help. One of the passengers necklace has been stolen from their safe. A playing card was left behind. Velma quickly solves the crime and the Mystery Inc. crew quickly realize these people are actors and they are on a mystery cruise. So of course they are going to be fake mysteries to solve.
They gang, with Bruce Wayne, head into a themed room. We see Bruce hear a noise, but the others don’t notice. Velma then realizes Bruce is gone. He is out on deck and they all realize the ship has changed course. Bruce tells them he is not feeling well, and he leaves them to go change into Batman. The gang doesn’t understand how Bruce can get seasick when he does adrenaline activities like cave diving.
I love that the gang are excellent mystery solvers, but they still have no idea Bruce is Batman.
The gang goes to talk to the Captain to see what happened. The Captain says the waynefinder (a big magnifying glass that scan the ocean floor) says they are still on course, but their communications have been blocked. Pirates then appear and tell the Captain he is no longer in charge.
Batman arrives to talk to the Pirates and they disappear out of this air. The Captain goes to make sure everyone on board stays in their room. Batman heads over to talk to the Doctor to examine kelp. The gang heads over to the performers dressing room, but there is no one in there. While looking for clues a Pirate comes out and scares them. Two other passengers help the gang to see the Doctor. The gang and Batman found clues to who the Pirates might be. Earlier, Batman threw a Batarang at Captain Hyde and it dented. So they know these Pirates are not ghosts.
The ship arrives on the island where the pirates are waiting for them. Captain Hyde notices the Scooby gang are missing and orders his people to find them. The Scooby gang are there, but in pirate disguise. Batman then pulls off the mask of Captain Hyde to reveal Black Manta, Aquaman’s enemy.
I will say. This comic confused me a little. I wasn’t sure who all the Pirates were. But I think the whole Pirate crew were actually the actors from the Mystery Inc. Cruise. So I believe Black Manta was using them and had them believing that they were part of a show. When in actuality Black Manta/Captain Hyde wanted to do something bad. Still not exactly sure what Black Manta was after.
