This was such a GREAT movie! I have not read the book, so I am not sure how close or different to the book it is (I will read it to find out).
Ok, so I LOVE Sherlock Holmes! I have seen every movie, I have seen the BBC show, and I watched every episode when it was a TV show on FOX Kids. Seeing this version of a Sherlock Holmes take was fantastic! I absolutely LOVE Enola Holmes! I thought that I would miss having Sherlock be the center of attention, but I didn’t miss him at all! They did such a great job with Enola’s character that I was invested from the beginning.
I enjoyed watching this movie. It was filled with action, mystery, and fun detective work. I loved the fighting scenes that Enola was in. It was wonderful to see a young woman using her Jiu-Jitsu skills. This movie even had a few scenes that I did not see coming, but the were still very much enjoyable. To me there was never a dull moment.
Millie Bobby Brown is awesome in this movie. She is great in Stranger Things AND she is great in this movie as Enola. If you are a fan of Millie then you will become an even bigger one after this movie. Enola is a well educated, smart, strong, and powerful young woman. She does what she wants to and she apologizes to no one for it. I like that she is not what society think a Lady should act like. That Enola was consistently defying ALL of the social norms which can totally be carried over into todays world. Also, Enola truly rivals her brother Sherlock’s detective skills. I also feel Enola brings out the sides we don’t get with Sherlock, so that is a nice change. As much as I LOVE Sherlock, I do he was a bit less cold, but then again that’s his personality.
Henry Cavill is a WONDERFUL Super. . . Sherlock Holmes ๐ His take on Sherlock was great. We are used to Robert Downey Jr. and Benedict Cumberbatch’s take on Sherlock it was refreshing to have another. He brings his own charm to playing Sherlock. Give Sherlock more of a warmer side. Which I LOVE.
When Millie and Henry are on screen together they have fantastic chemistry! They both carry the film very well together. To me I really did feel they were brother and sister. If they make another movie I hope we get more of them working together. I still want them to focus on Enola though. Maybe make Sherlock more of a Watson character to Enola.
The only thing that I did not care too much for was Enola breaking the fourth wall. I liked it in the beginning when she was explaining the opening of the movie. But then it got a little boring because I felt it was too much. To me it did not add anything to the film. So I felt when she did that she was taking me out of the movie. Breaking the fourth wall was unnecessary and did not feel natural. When watching Deadpool and seeing how they break the fourth wall there was beautifully done. If they end up making a sequel they should watch Deadpool and take some tips.
At the end of this movie there are some storylines that went underdeveloped. I did end the movie with a few questions, but hopefully they will talk about these points when they make a second one.
I am not very savvy in the cinematography world, but I thought every scene in the movie was wonderful. There were no shots that I questioned. . . Unlike Wonder Woman 1984 ๐ Anyway, I was really pleased with the way it was shot. When the fight scenes were happening I felt I could see everything. That I didn’t miss anything or where I had to fill in the blanks.
Overall, Enola Holmes is a fun, adventurous, and entertaining mystery detective movie. If you want a family friendly movie full of fun and adventure this is the perfect movie. It is also a perfect movie for you if you want to see a different take on the Sherlock Holmes name.
