🟢 Non Spoiler Review 🟢
So I was pretty torn about this movie. I liked it because I love the Tom and Jerry shorts, but I did not like this as an actual movie. It was fun watching it because it was just like watching the shorts on TV.
What I disliked the most about this movie was that they did not focus on Tom or Jerry. There were more of a side character. Which is crazy to me because this is their movie! If they weren’t going to focus on the two leads I was hoping they would at least made the other people have a solid personality or solid character, but that also did not happen. All the other characters fell flat. The movie as a whole was kind of all over the place.
The animation style of this movie was pretty interesting in my opinion. It was cool to see that all the people were real, but all of the animals were animated. It was a pretty interesting dynamic. What I appreciate a lot is that they really did stay true to the design of Tom and Jerry. I like that they did not try to redesign it. Like what happened with Sonic before it released into the theaters. This I was a total fan of. But sadly the focus was still way too much on the real people.
Since the focus really is on the people, the humor of the movie falls flat. I was surprised that it did because the cast is great. But to me it falls flat because they did not put love and trust into Tom and Jerry. They really should have just gone all in on them. You know, the creators should have rewatched Roger Rabbit and taken some pointers from them.
Even the main plot of the movie was pretty boring. It was not entertaining at all! Nothing about the humans were interesting either. I could not connect with any of them. The movie was pretty much all about the high profile wedding that I honestly could care less about. Even though the plot is boring I am sure kids will still enjoy it. They will enjoy the few funny comedic interactions that Tom and Jerry do have.
Overall, I say watch it just for the nostalgia of watching a Tom and Jerry TV show. This was not a good movie for those who grew up with Tom and Jerry and it was not a great introduction for the kids who have never heard of them. If you don’t already have HBO Max then I say skip this movie for sure. If it is playing at your local theater I also say still skip the movie. They really should reboot this movie and try it again.
