When they announced this comic series I was STOKED! I absolutely love, love, love Obi-Wan Kenobi. So I am always down for new stories regarding him. There is still a lot that we do not know about him. When we got the Star Wars Clone Wars television series I was really happy because we were going to see the bond with Obi and Anakin and learn more about the characters. I cannot wait to read what new adventures Obi-Wan will go on.

Even though this first issue was a little slow I did not mind at all. They are setting this up as a journal type of comic. Where Obi is looking back at his journals reflecting on his life and the adventures and people he has met. I am intrigued to read about the adventures Obi went on, but in a more intimate way. With how wonderful this first issue is, I am in for the ride that Cantwell is going to take us on.

The artwork in this is beautiful! The really nail the colors of the planets. When we are on Tatooine it is all yellows and brown, then on Coruscant it was blues and blacks because it took place at night and we were in the underworld. It was also pleasing to the eyes too. Just the marriage between drawing and color mushed together so well. Anindito really captured the likeness of Obi-Wan. Every detail that went into this comic is appreciated. Anindito and Lopez need to stay working together.

Like I said before, I am excited to read about the stories that Obi-Wan wants to share with us.

Tatooine, Western Dune Sea. Obi-Wan says he has been on this plant and in 20 years he has not seen it rain. In all these years he has learned how to feel the ravaging sand storms. He is able to listen to the wind and he watches his Eopie, Akkani, reaction to the weather.

Obi goes home to prepare for the sand storm. He says to himself he is used to waiting, but this time he is feeling fear because he senses there is a ”surge in darkness”. He also says to himself that he remembers this ”kind of solitary shiver” back in the Jedi Temple.

Jedi Temple Flashback, Coruscant Where the Upper Levels Live People of Privilege and the Bottom Unimaginable Horrors. Young Obi wakes up in the middle of the night sweating and shivering while calling out for someone named Gehren Rand. Obi finds another youngling like himself sitting on the rooftop edge of the Jedi Temple. Gehren says he needs to leave because he keeps having nightmares of their father being in terrible pain. Obi tells them to go to Master Yoda because he can help them. Gehren says they did, but Yoda said it may not be the truth they are seeing. Gehren wants to leave to not take that chance and Obi is sad because Gehren is his only friend.

Since Gehren is Obi’s close friend, he jumps after her to help her. Breaking the Jedi Code. He knows he needs to help her because she has been helping him so much through not only being his friend, but by being strong with the force and guiding him. While Obi is trying to find Gehren, he is blocked by thugs and Obi tries to fight his way out of getting captured and then Gehren shows up and calls one a “Nerf-Herder”.

The person who paid the men to capture them was a Zebrak called Nodrus Cay, and they are with the criminal organization Black Sun. Gehren is working with Nodrus because they are going to help her and het her out of Coruscant. Obi knows Nodrus won’t do this for free, so Gehren gives them Eadun Silver, which is worth more than one month of spice smuggling. Obi is mad because Gehren kept an attachment from home, then tells Gehren he is going with her.

Obi wants to help her because he cannot live without her kinship and the comfort she provides him. While they are going to the ship Obi gets a bad feeling. They then get handcuffed and Nodrus says “you know how valuable two force-sensitive children will be in my service?”. Obi and Gehren focus on the force and break out of the cuffs. They were able to escape. Obi heads back to the Jedi Temple and Gehren still leaves to help her dad.

Yoda is there waiting for Obi-Wan to return and he tells him that Obi-Wan himself will be able to keep himself safe. Obi then narrates to us that he has not seen Gehren rand since that night and he hope she never succumb to fear and that she saved her father. He also narrates that he is trying to hold back his own fear.
