I wasn’t sure about this show because I was so heart broken with the ending of Game of Thrones. So I don’t want to get my hopes up. If I fall in love with House of Dragon they better not let me down! I can’t go through that again!
After watching this first episode it has really made me want to read the book A Song of Ice and Fire.
Milly Alcock is a wonderful actress! She has really got the character of Rhaenyra down. She reminds me a lot of Arya Stark. So I already know I am going to like her. Arya is my favorite character in all of Game of Thrones. The moment Rhaenyra said “I want to ride dragons and eat cake” I fell in love with her.
Daemon Targaryen is an awesome character. Matt Smith plays him perfectly. I haven’t seen Doctor Who, so I don’t have an issue with that type of character change.
Also, I am glad that they told us this all takes place 172 years before the Mad King’s death. I am glad they did this because now I will not be asking too many questions of this leading in to Game of Thrones.
This was a GREAT first episode. I am already hooked. Acting was on point. Dialogue was on point. It was all on point.
🔴 Summary Spoiler Spew 🔴
King Jaehaerys tells the great lords of Westeros that his successor will be Viserys instead of his cousin, Rhaenys. Jaehaerys does this because a man needs to rule Westeros. In the present time Viserys is in his small council with his Hand, Otto Hightower and the Master of Ships, Lord Corlys Velaryon. Corlys tells Viserys that he needs to focus on military alliances in the east.
At this small council I thought it was great because Viserys lets Rhaenyra in when they are all discussing the goings on in Westeros.
Viserys then goes to see his pregnant wife, Lady Aemma Targaryen. She tells him this is the last time she will try to get pregnant because she has had too many still births. Luckily they were able to have one child, their daughter, Rhaenyra. Since Aemma is about to give birth, Viserys holds a tournament in the name of his unborn child who he believes is a son. Sadly, during the tournament Aemma dies during childbirth as well as her new baby. She dies because Viserys chooses to do a C-section in hopes it will save the baby.
This was such a crazy scene that I honestly do not know how to handle. Scenes cut back and forth from the tournament to Aemma’s childbirth. It was truly invasive and horrifying.
Rhaenyra and Alicent, the Hand’s daughter, are best friends. They walk around gossiping with each other. When they find out that Aemma has died during childbirth, Otto tells Alicent that she should go to the King and help him grieve.
I had such icky feelings when Otto told Alicent to wear her mom’s dress when she goes to see the King.
For the tournament, Daemon does come down to visit his brother Viserys and to see his niece Rhaenyra. He does very well at the tournament, but no one is truly fighting him since he is the King’s brother. The only one who truly goes against him is a guy knight names Ser Criston.
Daemon and Rhaenyra’s relationship is something I am definitely keeping my eye on. They are a little too close for comfort, but this is something the Targaryen’s are known for.
We do see that Viserys was cut from the Iron Throne and it is giving his body an infection.
It is crazy to see that the Throne is poisoning Viserys.
Viserys names Rhaenyra as his heir and he tells her a secret that only Kings know. He tells her that Aegon the first has passed on that The Long Night is coming and when it does a Targaryen must be on the throne.
I thought this was great because this foreshadows the White Walkers! I gave out a loud gasp when Viserys said this.
